Tesla in full self-driving mode appears to run over a child-sized mannequin in 'test conditions'

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A'deeply disturbing' video claims to show a Tesla in full self-driving mode running over a child-size mannequin during a test by a safety campaign group. The Dawn Project said the vehicle failed to detect the stationary dummy's presence in the road and hit it over and over again at an average speed of 25mph. It claims that the experiment was carried out under'controlled conditions' on a test track in California. Tesla, which was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has been approached for a comment by MailOnline but is yet to respond to the video. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that it'currently has an open and active investigation of Tesla's Autopilot active driver assistance system'.

Tesla car in 'Full Self-Driving' mode hits a bollard on camera

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A Tesla Model 3 car in'Full Self-Driving' mode has been captured colliding with a bike lane barrier post, in a potential setback for Elon Musk's firm. The footage was captured during a drive in downtown San Jose, California, by a YouTuber who goes by the name AI Addict, and provides the first recorded evidence that the feature has been directly responsible for an accident. It shows the latest version of Tesla's self-driving software, Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta version 10.10, veering the Model 3 into the bollard separating a bike lane. Even though the driver is hitting the brakes and furiously spins the steering wheel away from the obstacle, the AI-powered FSD system hits the bollard with a big thud. Worryingly, at other points in the video the Model 3 appears to run a red light and attempts to go down a railroad track and later a tram lane.

Tesla recalls 54,000 vehicles with 'Full Self-Driving' over 'rolling stop' feature

The Guardian

Tesla is recalling nearly 54,000 cars and SUVs because their "Full Self-Driving" software lets them roll through stop signs. Documents posted on Tuesday by US safety regulators say Tesla will disable the feature with an over-the-internet software update. The "rolling stop" feature allows vehicles to go through intersections with all-way stop signs at up to 5.6mph (9 km/h). Tesla agreed to the recall after two meetings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), according to documents. Tesla said it knows of no crashes or injuries caused by feature. The recall covers Model S sedans and X SUVs from 2016 through 2022, as well as 2017 to 2022 Model 3 sedans and 2020 through 2022 Model Y SUVs.

Tesla requires Full Self Driving testers to allow video collection in case of a crash

Engadget

With Tesla's latest FSD ("Full Self-Driving") release, it's asking drivers to consent to allowing it to collect video taken by a car's exterior and interior cameras in case of an accident or "serious safety risk." That will mark the first time Tesla will attach footage to a specific vehicle and driver, according to an Electrek report. Tesla has gathered video footage as part of FSD before, but it was only used to train and improve its AI self-driving systems. According to the new agreement, however, Tesla will now be able to associate video to specific vehicles. "By enabling FSD Beta, I consent to Tesla's collection of VIN-associated image data from the vehicle's external cameras and Cabin Camera in the occurrence of a serious safety risk or a safety event like a collision," the agreement reads.

NHTSA will investigate Tesla collision blamed on Full Self-Driving beta

Engadget

Are you uncomfortable with the idea of Tesla letting owners test Full Self-Driving betas on public streets? Reuters reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating a driver's complaint that the FSD beta led to a November 3rd collision in Brea, California. The owner alleged that his Model Y entered the wrong lane, leading to impact with another car and serious damage on the left side. The EV offered an alert partway through the turn, according to the driver. However, the FSD software supposedly wouldn't let the driver regain control, forcing the car into the wrong lane.

Editor's Note: Tech Tracker looks at different technologies that are disrupting the industry and changing the way restaurants operate and interact with customers. Through a partnership with online reservation platform Resy, several critically acclaimed and buzzworthy restaurants across the country are hosting "Off Menu Week" throughout the year starting in late February. Off Menu Week was designed as an alternative to traditional restaurant weeks, which occur in various cities throughout the year. Off Menu Week, by contrast, celebrates experimentation and risk. "As diners, we crave connection to the creative people behind our favorite restaurants. We thought, let's throw out the dated premise of restaurant week and bring to life a program that's fundamentally about that connection and creativity," Resy co-founder and CEO Ben Leventhal said in a statement.
